Could Just Four Brazil Nuts a Month Help Lower Cholesterol?
It sounds too good to be true but one small study produced results so surprising that it caught the attention of the nutrition world. Researchers gave healthy volunteers a single serving of Brazil nuts and tracked their cholesterol levels over the following month. The results were remarkable.

The Study
In the study, 10 healthy men and women were given either 0, 1, 4, or 8 Brazil nuts in a single meal. Researchers then measured changes in their cholesterol levels over time. Participants who ate Brazil nuts saw significant reductions in LDL cholesterol (often referred to as “bad” cholesterol) within just 9 hours. Within 24 hours, LDL levels had dropped by nearly 20 points in some cases. The researchers noted that measurable changes appeared rapidly compared with the typical onset of statin effects.
The Effect Lasted for 30 Days
Researchers continued checking cholesterol levels 5 days later, and then 30 days later. The participants had not continued eating Brazil nuts during this time. They had consumed only a single serving at the beginning of the study. Yet their cholesterol levels remained improved a full month later. Incredibly, the group eating just 4 Brazil nuts appeared to respond even better than the group eating 8. The researchers concluded that a single serving of four Brazil nuts may be enough to improve LDL and HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels for up to 30 days.
Why Brazil Nuts May Work
Brazil nuts are one of the richest dietary sources of selenium, an essential mineral involved in antioxidant defence, thyroid function, and inflammation control. Selenium helps support enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, which protect the body from oxidative stress — one of the contributors to cardiovascular disease. Just one Brazil nut can contain anywhere from 50–100+ micrograms of selenium depending on where it was grown.
A Word of Caution
While the results are fascinating, this was a very small study involving only 10 people. More research is needed before drawing strong conclusions. There is also an important safety consideration: Brazil nuts are extremely high in selenium. Eating large amounts regularly could potentially push intake above the safe upper limit. The good news is that the study found no liver or kidney toxicity from the single serving used. Because of the high selenium content, many nutrition experts suggest moderation and four Brazil nuts occasionally may be more sensible than eating large quantities daily. Because selenium content varies considerably, moderation is generally recommended. Some health professionals suggest limiting intake to around one per day.
The Bottom Line
The idea that eating just four Brazil nuts once a month could improve cholesterol for weeks sounds almost unbelievable. But sometimes nutrition science produces results that are genuinely surprising. Even though larger studies are still needed, Brazil nuts remain an inexpensive, natural, nutrient-rich food with potential cardiovascular benefits and adding a few to your diet occasionally is a very low-risk experiment for most healthy people. While the findings are intriguing, this was a very small preliminary study and larger trials are needed to confirm the effect. Brazil nuts are nutrient-dense and rich in selenium, but because selenium intake can become excessive, moderation is important.
